The best method I've used (in over 12 years of cable labelling) is simply
to
use a sticky number labeller. The dispenser has 10 roles of tape numbered
0-9. The tape is then rapped around the cable to show any number of choice.
These do not restrict the cable in being passed through holes in walls etc.
and don't fall off. A simple number to cable location sheet can then be
drawn up.
