Well, how's about this for timing, this very afternoon I had the pleasure
of
spending some time with Fujitsu-Siemens computers, who showed me some
forthcoming products that will be available in the next few weeks/months...

One of them is a PC mouse with a fingerprint scanner built into the top of
it (just behind the scroll-wheel), and another was a PC keyboard with a
fingerprint scanner built-in just to the right and just above the Enter
key...

The mouse should be available soon - I'm informed they are currently
working
on a deal to sell them in Dixons & PC world, and they are expected to
be
about £70 a pop. No price or availability on the keyboard, he would only
say
that it is still a beta product.

Most interesting of all though, was that he told me that the technology is
based on sensing the sweat on the fingertip to measure the surface contour
(it measures 11 discrete contours of the fingertip), and he told me that it
therefore cannot be fooled by someone cutting off a finger and using it
(unless it's VERY fresh, I guess...).

So, to whoever it was last week in the excellent ibutton vs biometric
debate, who suggested that someone might cut off their finger to fool a
fingerprint based access control system, - well that's already been solved
then hasn't it!! - told you biometrics is the way to go didn't I? - you
just
see if I'm right....

(First Compaq, now F-S... who next? - how long before every PC using person
is completely at home with the idea of scanning their fingerprint to log
in?....)

Have a GREAT weekend all....

Paul G.
