I think you put your finger on the gap between us with the paragraph
that started:

Even given your argument that the lack of mass-market acceptance will
keep prices high (with which I totally agree), what _I_ personally want
is the _best_ system I can get, and am prepared to pay a price for that.
The price is not just money, but also time (research rather than going
to Maplins, let alone actually building stuff!), and "hassle" (a
factor
I consider separate from time, and includes things like "wife's
reaction
to putting temporary holes in the plaster".)

Just turning to the money, however, I would be interested to know how
much people have "invested" in home automation, but want to put a
spin
on the question:

So come on all you hard-core HA-ers, have you spent:

- Less than the price of your TV?
- More than the price of your TV, but less than the price of your
carpets?
- More than the price of your carpets, but less than the price of your
car?
- More than the price of your car?
