I can offer some insight here.

Freenetname has been set up by ITG, who amongst other things own Global
Internet. I know the Chairman, and he told me about this last time I spoke
to him. They wanted to introduce a free service, but stop people from
moving
to another ISP after a few weeks or so. The biggest problem that ALL the
free ISPs have, is that the vast majority of customers only
"park" for a
very short space of time. The netname was designed to stop this movement.
The biggest problem customers had was with the rediculous charges for
support calls, so they fixed that.

The only drawback he admitted to applied to the small proportion of people
who need to check their email while travelling abroad. But hey you can't
have everything for nothing. As to the cost of moving the name, how much
would it cost you to register a name in the first place?

Tim.
