Re: x10 over three phase

Once upon a time........
many years ago, I rewired a house for a freind of mine.
At the time of purchase the house had a normal single phase
supply of 60A if I remember correctly.

His wife-to-be was scared of Gas so insisted that the gas was
ripped out and everything was electric. This meant that the
heating had to be Night Storage Heaters. This pushed the
total load well above the limit of the existing supply and the
local electricity board supplied a 3 phase supply.

>From a wiring point of view this is nightmare city :-((
No two outlets on different phases were allowed within 2 metres
of each other as 415V would exist between them. This meant that
the desired positions for some sockets and Nightstore outlets had to
be modified.

I wired the house with all lighting and power circuits on the red phase,
the downstairs storage heaters on the yellow phase,
and the upstairs storage heaters on the blue phase.

Obviously this was before the days of X-10 in the UK, but if I had to wire
a similar house today, I would try and ensure that all X10 loads were on
the
same phase and use my Homevision to drive contactors to control heavy
loads on the other two phases.

Hope that helps.

As I understand things (and I'm certainly no expert), no domestic
property is ever likely to be using any equipment that would require
a 3-phase supply. I think what the EB means is that your area/street
requires upgrading to a 3-phase supply on a beefier cable. Your own
property will continue to have a 1-phase supply. On a typical street
each property will tap into a single phase of the 3-phase supply so
that every third house is on the same phase.
