Re: Punchdown blocks

Hi Nigel,

Sorry, I meant to reply when I saw the first message but forgot :-((

For permanent wiring that will never or seldomly be altered eg Hardwired
Keypads and sensors then I would use a BT style connection box (Box Conn
301A) fitted with Krone 237 strips.
The cables are terminated on the top half of the strip and jumpered on the
lower half.

For all CAT5 wiring that goes to sockets and needs to be easily patchable
use a Patch Panel.

The Box Conn and Krone strips are availabl from Farnell etc.

Remember that the solid cored wire can only be flexed a few time before it
starts to break so you want to ensure that all your installed wire is fixed
firmly into place with any patching done by means of a patch panel or
jumpers on a box conn. It also looks much neater that way. :-))

Subject:	[ukha_d] Punchdown blocks

I asked this in passing a week or so back, but no-one replied... I know
everyone with any wired HA will probably have an answer, so I'll try again
;-)

All the US folks seem to use AT&T 66 and 110 punchdown blocks in their
wiring centres. I can't see anything by this name in RS/Farnell etc- are
the BT type 237A the same system by a different name? What are people
using for
cat-5/security/HA connections? Am I the only one who doesn't want to wire
them all together in a big jumble and stuff it in a box ;-)?

There's no specific mention of the 237A being suitable for Ethernet, and I
understand some of the 66 blocks have a problem penetrating the insulation
on some cat-5...
