Interesting,
CAT5 cable & RJ45 plugs are hardly "obscure" either are
they?..
I recently tried to get a 305m drum of CAT5 cable (preferably solid core,
as
it was meant for floodwiring my house, although I would have accepted
stranded if necessary), 50-odd RJ45 plugs, and an RJ45 crimp tool. My visit
to my local Maplin store yielded ONLY the crimp tool!!. I got the plugs
delivered about 3 days later (making it midweek, meaning a full week's
delay
on starting cabling...), but even worse, I was told that there was no CAT5
cable available from any Maplin store, anywhere in the UK!! - Which to be
honest was probably just as well, as much as you observerved, the spotty
teenager serving me could not even tell me if the cable they were selling
was solid or stranded!! - only that it was about £120 per 305m drum... I
eventually procured a drum of stranded from Scan (www.scan.co.uk) for £42
Another time I wanted 8 gold plated panel-mount Binding posts to contruct a
Speaker patch panel on the wall behind my AV unit, and like you, I had to
visit 2 Maplin stores, and I cleared them both out!
My Wife has Tesco's Clubcard, Safeway's ABC card, and (I think) Boots
Advantage card!!
BTW, I also remember Green Shield Stamps - I remember many a time as a boy
spending hours licking them all and sticking them in the book for my mum
;-)
Cheers.
Paul.
