Re: Ventilation/cooling of PCs

I don't follow the logic in this. The effect of running a PC
continuously isn't really that significant on the wider scale of things
(what car do you drive?), and when you start considering what is the
most environmentally friendly option (which I presume is what you mean
by 'ecologically biased') then there really is no proper answer...

Turning off the PC when not in use (assuming this is possible) increases
the wear on components meaning they need replacing more often - the
resources required to make and supply these components have an
environmental cost that probably outweighs the savings.

Automation run from a PC has the potential to save energy: I'm currently
working (slowly) on reducing the amount of hot water my boiler produces
each day that goes to waste. I'm sure that most boilers waste far more
energy than most PCs - my PC certainly never produces enough heat to
fill a bath...

You can do a lot more to help the environment than simply worrying about
energy consumption. You need to consider the wider implications of
environmental issues before deciding what is 'good' and what is 'bad'.
Recycling paper produces more pollutants (vehicle emissions and
bleaching agents) than producing paper from renewable sources.

Most environmentalists are hypocrites, and I'm one of them ;-)
