Brian,

Sorry - been off-line for 36 hours... If you still need this, then we
can run through it tomorrow.

The (overly - and yes, I am deliberately fudging thiungs) simple answer
is that SMTP is a mail DELIVERY mechanism, POP3 is a mail STORAGE
mechanism.

To deliver a message over the Internet, the sender's systems query DNS
to see what machines is lined up to take delivery of mail for that
domain. (It's in something called the "MX" record which lives in
the
"Zone file".)

(In the case of a corporate user, the "sender's system" is
normally
their coporate mail server, in the case of a home user, it's normally
their ISP's SMTP server.)

The sender then tries to send the message to "port 25" - ie the
"SMTP"
port on the appointed machine.

Assuming that there's some suitable software running on that machine, it
will accept and incoming connection on port 25, and take delivery of the
message.

If the "suitable software" is an Exchange server, then it will
then try
to route the message through the Exchange servers it knows about, since
it is meant to know about ALL the mailboxes in the domain it's
responsible for. In your case, this will be to itself, since it's the
only Exchange server in your organisation. It will then dump the message
into the right user's mailbox, for access through an Exchange client,
Outlook, or OWA.

If the "suitable software" is a POP3 server, then it will hold it
in the
right POP3 maibox, based on the username in question. Then it waits for
a client, like Eudora or Outlook Express to ask for the messages.

Therefore, what you actually need to do is change the "MX"
records for
your domain to point to your Exchange server, rather than your ISP's
POP3 server. In order to do this, you'll need to give your Exchange
server a static IP address or, better, a static DNS name...

Mark Harrison

Subject: [ukha_d] OT - Domain names and Exchange - OT

I am using W2K Advanced Server and Exchange 2000.
I want to use Exchange 2000 for email as a learning thing, but Exch 2K
does
not support POP3, I have got a "bolt on" type program, POPRoute,
but
have
not yet installed it as I really want to do things as in the real world
(where ever that is).

Now the question, if I have understood things correctly as I own
Reynolds-Towers.co.uk, can I use this to connect to Exch 2K and then do
I
ask NTL to move my POP3 over to SMTP or have I got the wrong end of the
stick?

If someone could advise me as to what they use I will be very grateful
and
for those who do not want the OT posts, please accept my apologies.

B.
