In addition to what Keith has mentioned, you might like to consider what
is the maximum sampling rate required. Nyquist's theorem roughly states
that the sample rate must be at least twice the input bandwidth for
accurate observation. eg. A 10MHz signal would require a 20MHz bandwidth
scope to observe properly.

One thing to bear in mind when considering the purchase of digital storage
oscilloscopes (DSO) is that they are usually quoted in samples per second.
This is not the bandwidth of the scope but merely the number of samples it
is capable of taking in a second. The effective bandwidth is much lower.
There are a number of PC parallel port scopes being quoted as 100MSa/s
when the PC's parallel port would be struggling to reach speeds of over
1MSa/s (in bytes). They are no good for real-time waveform observations at
rates greater than 1MSa/s. A DSO does allow the "storage" of a
section of
waveform for display on the PC.
