SWMBO is an indoor coverage project manager for a large mobile phone
operator. Sometimes I actually listen to what she is going on about ;-)....

Most modern offices with reflective windows steel frame construction etc
are
terrible when it comes to mobile reception, even in a strong coverage area,
so for large corporate customers, airports, shopping centres etc they
install indoor schemes which consist of ceiling mounted antennas (look like
smoke detectors) these wire back to something called a BTS unit, the call
then goes out over regular phone lines back to their exchange. The customer
still pays for regular calls, and the BT link is paid for by the mobile
phone operator.

The average spend for an indoor scheme is £125,000 but before you get
your
chequebook out, they wont do residential unless you are royalty or their
chairman :-) Large corporates don't pay a penny, they just have to stick
with the operator for x years.

Your 'rotating antennae' scenario sounds like it could be a case of
non-dominance (apparently!) you could be in the middle of several masts
which, strangely, isn't good. Go figure!
She has shown me this before on her 'special' phone. This phone shows which
mast you are 'connected' to, but in the case of non-dominance it keeps
changing. Result, patchy coverage.

BTW I have asked SWMBO to enquire about 3G beta testing. I'll report to the
list when I get my unit (as if!)
