LCD Displays

Does anybody know what causes LCD displays to fail?

I have a couple of large LCD displays on a Racal receiver
which is about 20 years old and I've heard of people having
the displays fail on them.
The problem is that replacement displays probably cost more
than the receiver and that's if you can get hold of them!
