They would be ORed and as you correctly say, the grounds of the KAT5 TX
units would be connected to each other but if you wanted several KAT5
systems to drive the same emitter then almost certainly they are going to
be
distributing AV from the same source so would have their grounds tie
together anyway.

Does FirM use a modulated or unmodulated IR input. The output of the KAT5
TX
would be modulated @ 38kHz.
