Hi Brad,

Unlikely to be that. More likely to be a wiring or cable fault on that run.

check for crossed pairs, short circuits, wires not punched down properly.

One of the tests I did was to DELIBERATELY tiewrap a CAT5 cable to a
2"
diameter armoured cable that ran warm to the touch. the two cables were
adjacent for a drop of 4 floors in a cable riser. There is no interference
whatsoever.

There is no need for sheilded. KAT5 is balanced so any interference picked
up is picked up equally on both wires of the pair. Balanced transmission
takes the signal from the difference between the wires. As the interference
is equal on both wires there is no difference therefore no interference.

The only time you will pick anything up is when the circuit becomes
unbalanced due to a cable fault.
