You shouldn't really run Cat5 cable outside because of potential damage
from
lightning strikes. But if you do run it outside you should, at least, run
the cable in a protective conduit. The conduit will protect the cable from
knocks and stop the outer sheath degrading in UV light.
I'm about to run some Cat5 to an outbuilding - about a 25m run. I'm
running
the cable in some buried ducting, and then have APC lightning protection at
both ends, otherwise I run the risk of frying the network switch (£600) and
the telephone system (£1000).
